Preparing for the HSC Without Burning Out
Finding Balance During Year 12
As HSC exams approach, many students begin cutting back on the activities they enjoy so they can dedicate more time to studying. It seems like the logical thing to do, but is giving up healthy routines always the best way to improve performance? Evidence suggests that maintaining balance through movement, sleep, and regular breaks can play an important role in managing stress and supporting learning.
More Hours Doesn't Always Mean Better Results
Year 12 is a marathon, not a sprint. While study is essential, spending every spare hour at a desk can leave students mentally fatigued and less productive.
Research in education and psychology continues to show that regular physical activity, quality sleep, and purposeful breaks support concentration, memory, and overall wellbeing. That's why organisations such as ReachOut Australia and Headspace encourage students to maintain healthy routines during stressful periods, rather than putting life on hold until exams are over.
A Perspective From the Classroom
As both a high school teacher and martial arts instructor, I've seen Year 12 from two perspectives. Every year, students ask whether they should stop sport or other activities to focus on study.
My advice is to be honest with yourself, think about what your priorities are, and to look at your current habits. Healthy routines like exercise, social connection, and regular movement often support wellbeing during stressful periods, while habits such as excessive screen time can leave us feeling drained without providing the same benefits. It's worth considering which habits are helping you, and which ones are simply filling your time.
When I completed my own HSC, I continued training and assisting classes throughout the year because for me, it was a place where I could see my friends, find stress relief and I enjoyed working out and teaching others. It was and still is a huge part of my identity so I made the choice to continue coming to BBP. My grades were equally important to me, so I was always motivated to use my time effectively so that neither one took time from the other. Looking back, that routine helped me stay balanced during one of the busiest periods of my life.
Success Starts with Good Habits
Success in the HSC isn't built on one big decision. It's built on the habits you practice every day. Whether it's staying active, getting enough sleep, taking regular breaks, or making time for an activity you enjoy, healthy routines can help you manage stress and stay focused throughout the year. Before giving something up, ask yourself whether it's helping you become the person and student you want to be, or whether your time could be better spent replacing less productive habits.
Your HSC results may open certain doors, but the habits you develop along the way will shape the person who walks through them. Learning to manage your time, care for your wellbeing, and stay committed to healthy routines are skills that will continue to serve you long after Year 12 has finished.
